A Branding Case Study

In many ways Belarus has been preserved as kind of a cold war era Soviet republic. The media is strictly controlled. State television broadcasts reports on agriculture, paeans to the “president” and little else. Oh. And to promoting its close partner Russia.

In addition, the KGB is alive and well there. Even after the collapse of the USSR the local branch (I love typing that) in Belarus didn’t bother to change its name.

When Belarus leaders were asked they responded, “Why would they? It’s a very strong brand name.”

(well. certainly cannot argue with that)

The Belarus president recently appointed a new KGB chief of staff. According to prosecutors who have since fled Belarus the new chief of staff’s previous assignment was organizing the death squads that murdered four of the Belarusian president’s most bothersome political rivals.

The Chairman of the Belarus KGB Stepan Sukharenko claimed that opponents of Lukashenko planned to stage a "violent coup" under cover of presidential elections on Sunday and warned that street protestors could face the death penalty.

(well. at least they are clear on their core competency).

Belarus KGB. A brand case study.
