Today is the French National Day, the 14th of July, or … le 14 juillet.

By the way … nobody in France calls it Bastille Day <that is a creation of the American mind>. The French are celebrating what is called Fête de la Fédération <the National Celebration> or, just as commonly, Le quatorze juillet france flag<the fourteenth of July>.

Regardless.

I am going to use the France national independence day holiday to talk about business and business organizations.

The national holiday is about national pride: the national bleu-blanc-rouge flag and the French values of Liberté, Fraternité and Egalité.
Liberté, égalité, fraternité.

French for “Liberty, equality, fraternity <brotherhood>” … the national motto of France.

Or.

==

“Any man aspires to liberty, to equality, but he cannot achieve it without the assistance of other men, without fraternity.”

(Napoleon)

Whether the business world accepts it or not … there has been a revolution in the way business organizations are created and run and managed.

revolution is coming

Notice I didn’t say how business is conducted … because we still make shit … aspire to make good shit and do good shit.

It’s more about HOW we are going about meeting those objectives.

And that is where liberty, equality and fraternity step in.

Liberty to think and aspire to greatness <or the best you can be>.

Equality of opportunity and ideas <or thinking> and acceptance that while talentwise there can be disparity amongst the organization that each and every one is valued.

Fraternity in that while individual aspirations are good, and should be encouraged, it is impossible to attain without the assistance of the greater organization.

Conceptually I believe most senior business leaders endorse this type of thinking and they actually may go through the motions <with good intentions> to deliver upon this type of thinking but practically, tangible behaviorwise, I tend to believe most senior business people suck at it.

And therein lies one of the foundational generational issues creating chafing in business organizations today.

bedlam revolution consciousA revolution has occurred within the masses but they struggle to topple the thinking of those who sit on the thrones.

We focus a lot on financial disparity between those on the throne and those who actually do the work but the financials are possibly just symbolic of an attitude and a way of thinking <of which there may be even a larger disparity here than with financial>.

Those on the throne offer platitudes and symbolic initiatives to attempt to appease the masses and while many in the masses <the organizational employees> are too scared to do anything but embrace the platitudes as ‘steps in the right direction’ … there are a number of those within the masses who reject the platitudes and symbolism.

They are creating a whole new world of business.

They are the revolutionaries.

They do not have a flag.

They do not have an anthem.

They are indefatigable in their pursuit of what seems to be a revolutionary idea to senior managers.

And they scare the shit out of those who currently sit on thrones.

Look.

I certainly do not propose socialism in a business environment. It has been shown again and again that a cooperative business environment is slow to make decisions and is cumbersome with regard to getting shit done <by the way … that translates into limited growth>.

Limited growth in and of itself is not bad … if that is what you, or your organization, have defined as an accepted boundary with what is more important to you within that boundary.

But most organizations are dynamic beyond their purposes and seek to find limits of their growth … and then redefine the limits in the pursuit of what ‘is the best i/we can be.’

And, culturally, this new generation of workers and leaders will prosper much more under the flag of liberty, equality & fraternity.

Senior people in larger organizations are going kicking and screaming as they are being faced by the mobs of this revolution.

Mostly they sit on their thrones and toss out platitudes and ignore the revolutionaries as an inexperienced idealistic court of judgement to their actions & behavior <and attitudes>.

I would remind them … this justice is worth just as much as that of the courts.

The revolution has occurred and many leaders have either chosen to ignore it or tried to tamp it down. And maybe that is the true lesson that Le quatorze juillet should teach us … revolutions and revolutionaries do not just disappear into the sunset.

They are relentless.

They are indefatigable.

They create the change they want to have happen.

Anyway.

Just a business thought for France’s independence day … Le quatorze juillet

Oh.

Lastly.

Because I have already written about baguettes before <and will most likely seek one out today: https://brucemctague.com/celebrons-bastille-day-baguettes-vel-dhiv > I will highlight one of my favorite local restaurants menu they are offering specially for the Fête de la Fédération or Le quatorze juillet <the fourteenth of July>.

If I can get a seat I will be there tonight.
