Halestorm … I miss the Misery

Ok. New music and new band. Halestorm.

And, no, this isn’t just a neat well thought out band name … it is a relevant neat thought out band name … because the Hales, brother & sister Arejay & Lzzy, are the creators of the band.

Now. This ain’t no easy listening music. It is in your face rock with solid riffs and some really really good guitar work intermingled. I kind of put them in the Dead Sara ‘weatherman‘ category but my sense is Halestorm could go more mainstream <if they elected to>. Lzzy is the lead guitar and lead singer and I found it interesting they toured with Evanescence because once you hear her sing she is like a raw Amy Lee vocal.  Would be interesting to hear them together.

Anyway. The song I heard that made me go figure out who they were is called “I miss the Misery:” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpJAmlnBxoA

So. There are female fronted band and then there are female musician fronted bands. Halestorm is the latter. Lzzy <Elizabeth> Hale is vocalist and songwriter for the rock band Halestorm, which also features her brother, Arejay, on drums, Joe Hottinger on guitar and Josh Smith on bass. The cool thing is she is a really good guitarist in her own right. Hale plays a Gibson Explorer, Les Paul Custom, Tribal Flying V, Firebird, and Joan Jett Signature Melody Maker, which was a gift from her band. In may 2012 Gibson Guitars created a signature series guitar for Lzzy.

In addition … the same month their song “Love bites … so do I” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmkHqUwa4zg ) became the first female fronted band song to top the rock charts <I did not verify that factoid which I should because that mean Joan Jett or Garbage or several others never did>.

Heads up on Love Bites … it races thru at a freakish pace and is reminiscent of some good ole hairband rock. Trust me … no one will nap during one of their shows.

Brother & sister Arejay and Elizabeth “Lzzy” Hale have been actively writing and performing original music since 1997 when they were 10 and 13 years old, respectively. Both brother and sister started learning piano at the age of 5; Lzzy later progressed to a keytar and Arejay to the drums. Lzzy took guitar lessons at 16. The teen siblings released an EP titled Don’t Mess With the Time Man in 2000.

The coolest factoid?
Their dad. In Halestorm’s earliest incarnation, Lzzy and Arejay’s father Roger Hale played bass before Josh Smith joined the group in 2004. How awesome is that? What a great dad.

Interesting rock band.

Good music if you like this kind of stuff.
