shit happens Life Goes On

=========

“That’s the way life goes, you know? NASA discovered all those habitable planets the other day. Do you guys know about that?

What did they say, there were how many of them?”

“1,200 of them.”

“1,200 habitable planets. And then last night somebody lost a basketball game.

Come on.

Get over yourself.”

Greg Popovich head coach of San Antonio Spurs

=============

Far too often we lose perspective. I am not sure this loss of perspective happens more often than when associated with sports <but it surely happens a lot n business also>.

moments here life perspectiveIt is almost standard operating procedure if you are a fan and your team loses that someone should be fired, someone is to blame or someone cheated.

You know what?

When there are two teams playing about the only thing I can guarantee is that one will win and one will lose.

And in the win or the loss … no one dies … no one changes the world … no one truly changes excepting maybe the ones who actually won or lost. And even then … maybe over 90% of the time the individuals go on to either win more or lose more … but do not die.

And that is why when I saw this quote from the losing coach of the San Antonio Spurs … most likely the actual second best team in the NBA <who had just lost to not the best NBA team> I chuckled a little.

It was a painful chuckle. But a chuckle nonetheless.

I love sports.

And, yes, if I am emotionally invested in some team or player … or even if I am playing … and I lose … it sucks. And it feels like a part of you has died. And maybe that is where the confusion comes in. We confuse disappointment with death of some form or fashion in our pea like brains and therefore associate far too much energy and ‘life’ into what just happened.

Perversely, we do this same thing in business however it is more often manipulated by some management. Individual moments, situations or “crises” become “life or death” situations when more often than not they are simply business situations which should be dealt with in an appropriately serious manner.

But no one dies if it doesn’t work out.

More often than not the business doesn’t fail … just maybe fail to achieve that one particular objective.

But the biggest loss and loser in all of this is perspective.

1,200 inhabitable planets.

While Popovich was stating a fact … it is also a metaphor.

For at the same time we lose or our team loses or if our business doesn’t measure up to some “life or death” scenario … somewhere out there … somewhere outside our sphere of current disappointment and loss … 1,200 new possibilities for Life are discovered, or created and yet to be discovered.

By the way … this is much different than simply having an attitude that I learn from my losses and mistakes and become better because of them. For while that is mostly true <not always … we can and do have stupid mistakes and losses> this perspective I am talking about is a reflection of vision and not retrospective knowledge.

We far too often lose perspective by ‘being in the moment.’ This is when ‘the moment’ becomes the end all and be all.

And I have said this before … and I will say it again … moments are moments.sum up life goes on moments frost

They are important as in terms of a semi-colon or a comma … but rarely in terms of a period.

They are as important as one inhabitable planet among 1,200 in the galaxy.

That is perspective.

And I gotta tell ya … more of us, in business and in Life, would benefit if we maintained a healthy perspective a little more often.
