storytelling & the importance of stories

“After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”

So.

Stories.

Telling them.

Making them.

Shit.

Deciding what ‘them’, your own story <maybe yet to be written?> is.

Which leads me to one of my favorite tumblr blogs < www.a-thousand-words.tumblr.com > where I saw this Pixar’s 22 rules for Storytelling:

Anyway.

If you are in the creative communications business, it is self explanatory <and provides some nice guidelines>.

If you are thinking about creating a presentation and giving a presentation … it provides some nice thought fodder.

But … more importantly … if you are thinking about what the story of your life is … and how you are writing it each and every day … this should be printed out and taped to your mirror so you can see it every morning. In fact … I would highly recommend you ditch all the personal branding bullshit advice and just go with his.

You have a story to be told.

You tell it to yourself everyday.

You rewrite it every night.

You edit it every day.

You critique it word by word and sometimes punctuation mark by punctuation mark.

“It’s like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story.”

Patrick Rothfuss

story to tell

Rothfuss is one of my favorite authors. And he is right. We build ourselves out of that story.

Which means … well … we are all storytellers.

And that is why these 22 rules for storytelling are relevant to each & every one of us.

You have a story to tell.

Tell it well.

Yeah.

Sometimes communicating, professional or personal, can be that simple & easy <you don’t really need some book to tell you this>.

===================

“Even if it’s a dumb story, telling it changes other people just the slightest little bit, just as living the story changes me. An infinitesimal change. And that infinitesimal change ripples outward – ever smaller but everlasting.

I will get forgotten, but the stories will last. And so we all matter – maybe less than a lot, but always more than some.”

John Green
