“The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it but that it is too low and we reach it.”

Michelangelo

Ok.

I love this quote. It may actually be tied for my favorite quote of all time.

It is a reminder to me that sometimes getting what you want isn’t really what we are in search of great adventureyou want. Or, as someone has said, “what do you do when you get what you want.”

Look.

I understand that some people like to reach some goals because it shows progress.

I am not one of those people.

I like the adventure … I like aiming high and I am quite comfortable hoping someday I can attain it and constantly working toward that objective.

Yeah.

I like the adventure.

I thrive in the exploration.

I would also imagine that I am the type of person that if I actually reached that ‘thing’ I would immediately be figuring what I am supposed to be aiming for next.

I think Michelangelo had a touch of kid in him.

What do I mean?

Well.

Haven’t you noticed that kids look at stars and never stop to think they are too high to grab they just start making wishes on them … and have a nice habit of grabbing wishes like candy at the store?

Haven’t you noticed that they don’t thrive on non stop goals & objectives and “milestones” … and instead have a nice habit of thriving on dreams, and possibilities … and “what ifs” and “why nots.” They are constantly energetically and persistently seeking “what’s next.”

And while I run a risk by writing this that readers will read and say …. “that is because they are kids. Adults cannot afford to do that.” reaching for star

Well.

My answer?

Michelangelo.

The dude did alright for himself and he aimed pretty frickin’ high.

Oh.

And still using him as an example this is relevant to business and personal.

He set incredibly high standards for his work and art. And when “under contract” he didn’t pad his estimates or fluff his deadlines or  compromise on quality.

He aimed high. And he may never have reached it but the dude always got hired.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm … now there’s a thought for you business folk.

In the end I imagine I am suggesting that one of the greatest dangers one can have in business & in life is to aim too low.
