“Inside us there is a word we cannot pronounce and that is who we are.”

Anthony Marra

Defining ourselves to … well … our self … can be a maddening chore. A chore which seems to not only never be done but never receive any compensation for the effort.

We circle the words we want to use with regard to who we are only to find that either the word remains on the tip of our tongue <and brain> which we just cannot seem to grasp or it comes to life in some unpronounceable word.

What I would say is that anger and fear are typically the anvil from which we forge who we are. And just as the swords of mythology were named as they were forged … that is the word we pronounce as who we are when we lift a newly created ‘us’ from the anvil.

Just as a blacksmith pounds the metal into shape fear and anger do the same … in ringing tones, lots of sweat and lots of hard laborious work.

Suffice it to say … standing over this anvil is hot sweaty work of which most of us would prefer to avoid. And that is where fear & anger have the ability to create an unpronounceable word for who we are.

If you avoid the anvil instead of holding a freshly forged sword high and naming it as a power we wield in our name … we instead have only fear or anger to hold up … and they already have a name.

We are left with only an unpronounceable word which is who you are.

Anyway.

Fear and anger.

Face them with resolve and courage for if you do not … well … I can almost guarantee you will never find the real word that describes who you are.

colors unpronounceable hand

Brushing up against fear and anger will color you for the rest of your life. But I would argue that you can choose what color your forged Life will be if you stand at the anvil and accept the work & sweat Life demands in seeking who you truly are pounding out the fear and anger and finding the word to pronounce that is “I.”

“All your life you’re yellow.

Then one day you brush up against something blue, the barest touch, and voila, the rest of your life you’re green. “
