fountains of wayne and someone’s gonna

Fountains of Wayne have a new cd coming out in August (Sky Full of Holes).

And they have an awesome new song on it.

Someone’s Gonna Break Your Heart:

I think you either like ‘the Fountains’ or you don’t. no inbetween.

This song I love. The refrain at around the 2:30 mark is everything I love about Fountains of Wayne and how they write their songs.

And, in general, I have always liked their quirkiness, their cleverness and hooky songs. All Kinds of Time.  Valley Winter Song. Everything’s Ruined.

Some really good songs from a good quirky band.

I also like the fact that the main songwriter is also in Ivy (another band I love with other great side projects like Brookville).

Just in case you only know Fountains of Wayne from Stacey’s Mom ( a song I am relatively indifferent to) here is an introduction to the band.

Fountains of Wayne formed in New York City in 1996 and consists of Chris Collingwood, Adam Schlesinger, Jody Porter and Brian Young. The group was formed by songwriters Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood (both very talented songwriter/singers). They met as freshmen at Williams College and began playing music together in various bands. They eventually went their separate ways, with Collingwood forming the Mercy Buckets in Boston and Schlesinger forming Ivy in New York City. The two met up once again during the mid-1990s and formed Fountains of Wayne.

Here is something fun about them (and their name):

Initially the band went by other names, including Are You My Mother? and Woolly Mammoth, before settling on Fountains of Wayne, taken from a lawn ornament store in Wayne, New Jersey. The store was located at the intersection of U.S. Route 46 and New Jersey Route 23,[3] not far from Montclair, New Jersey, the hometown of the band’s bassist and co-founder Adam Schlesinger. The store can be seen in The Sopranos episode “Another Toothpick” as well.

The store went out of business in 2009.

I wanted to include Everything’s Ruined but I couldn’t find it on youtube.  So here is Valley Winter Song:

Good band.  Plays good music to listen to.
