If you take a bunch of superstars and put them in a room where they don’t have their assistants and entourage, it’s funny to see what happens.

I have to say I have never been comfortable with somebody else telling me what to do – in any way.

Ok.

One of the better shows on Palladia music channel is Daryl’s House. It is Daryl Hall inviting musicians to his house where they perform in his studio <the very first musical guest on the show was John Oates>. The performances are Daryl playing with guest musicians, legends and new artists, and the songs are split between the guest musicians and Hall & Oates songs.
In addition … I love the fact that the guest artists don’t always just come in and perform their own hits with a Daryl Hall ‘spin’ but they also do their own take on Hall & Oates songs.

The other neat aspect is apparently Daryl loves food as much as he does music and he invites guest chefs to come in from time to time and show off their cooking ‘chops’ <and the food always looks frickin’ awesome>.

In almost each episode there is some neat footage as the food is prepared and everyone tastes and talks. They even show some great seemingly off-the-cuff discussion among some pretty accomplished musicians around the dinner table.

The show is fabulous.

Frickin’ fabulous.

Live from Daryl’s House, which began in 2007 as a webcast, now has something like 70 episodes or so. The show began being filmed in a historic Connecticut farmhouse that Daryl Hall turned into a recording studio. Daryl has since sold the house and bought a club in New York to continue shooting the show. He’s converting the club into a replica of the house so he doesn’t lose that ‘in home’ feel the original episodes had.

What made me decide to showcase Daryl’s House is that I just saw an episode with a band called Minus the Bear … which was frickin’ amazing.

I did not know who Minus the Bear was … but they are an indie rock group from Seattle, Washington <and they have five albums and four Eps>.

The name “Minus the Bear” comes from an in-joke among the band members, referring to the ’70s television series B. J. and the Bear. “A friend of the band had gone on a date,” explains singer-guitarist Jake Snider, “and one of us asked him afterwards how the date went. Our friend said, ‘You know that TV show from the ’70s, B.J. and the Bear? It was like that… minus the Bear.’ <Spin Magazine>

Anyway.

Minus the Bear was really really good:

About Daryl’s House:

Daryl Hall started Live From Daryl’s House as a free monthly web show in late 2007 after having the idea of “playing with my friends and putting it up on the Internet,” and the show has since garnered acclaim from Rolling Stone, SPIN, Daily Variety, CNN, BBC, Yahoo! Music and influential blogger Bob Lefsetz, who have cited Live From Daryl’s House as a perfect example of a veteran artist reinventing himself in the digital age by collaborating with both established colleagues and newer performers.

Past episodes of Live from Daryl’s House have featured a mix of well-known performers like Smokey Robinson, The Doors’ Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, Nick Lowe, K.T. Tunstall, Todd Rundgren, Gym Class Heroes’ Travis McCoy, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, Finger Eleven’s James Black and Rick Jackett, the Bacon Brothers and country star Jimmy Wayne, along with newcomers such as Philly soul singer Mutlu, Canadian techno-rockers Chromeo, MySpace pop-rock phenom Eric Hutchinson, Cash Money rocker Kevin Rudolf, Wind-up Records’ Chicago rockers Company of Thieves, Bay Area singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson, Charlottesville, VA’s rising Parachute, Chicago rock band Plain White T’s and highly touted tunesmith Diane Birch.

As a bonus … here is a fantastic duet of Daryl Hall & Todd Rundgren singing “Can we still be Friends”.
