Every once in a while you hear someone interviewed … and in the unthinking quick response moment … someone says something really thoughtful.
The question: Do you feel the pressure of the expectations?
“Pressure is a privilege.”
Larry Fitzgerald <NFL Cardinals receiver>
What a refreshing perspective.
It is very easy for us to suggest Life, or our situation, puts us under some undue, incredible pressure.
I hate to break the news to everyone … Life is pretty indifferent to us.
We are responsible for putting ourselves in any situation.
It is not like Life sits around with a Star Trek transporter looking around for someone to ‘beam’ into a situation <because it is not … it is probably just worried about what the Mayan calendar really means or whatever it worries about>.
Think about it … in most cases pressure is not a burden … it is the privilege of responsibility.
It is the privilege of the fact we actually had the opportunity for the pressure.
It also means you aren’t coasting through Life.
Kids create pressure. Kids are a privilege.
Jobs create pressure. Jobs are a privilege.
Time <or the seeming lack of it> creates pressure. Time <what Life gives us> is a privilege.
Pressure is just part of Life … well … assuming you are actually living your life.
And, yes, being under pressure can sure be stressful.
But 99.9% of the time pressure is driven by some sort of expectations … either self imposed or other imposed.
So maybe, on occasion, think of it as a compliment … before you freak out … as it is a fact expectations are deserved and not a burden.
Because it is … well … the privilege of pressure.
