“We live in a world where finding fault in others seems to be the favorite blood sport.

It has long been the basis of political campaign strategy.

It is the theme of much television programming across the world.

It sells newspapers. Whenever we meet anyone, our first, almost unconscious reaction may be to look for imperfections.”

I’m a little bit hemmed in
A little bit isolated
A little bit hopeful
A little bit calm

I’ve been talking to myself forever, yeah
And how I wish I knew me better, yeah
Still sitting on a shelf and never
Never seen the sun shine brighter
And it feels like me on a good day

On my mp3 player I have a song called On a Good Day by Oceanlab. Sometimes it pops up and it feels more important to listen to than other times. Why? We, as a society, are brutally negative. We find fault and find any number of ways to find proof that bad things happen, people do bad things and people seem to only rise to the occasion in bad times and bad moments. In fact, it almost seems like we go looking for the imperfections and the bad every time we have an opportunity. I would be remiss if I didn’t point out we also do this to ourselves. That said. Even in today’s angst ridden, sometimes dreary world, if you take a moment, you can find the glimpses of paradise. Let’s call them “the days when it feels like me on a good day.”

“If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it.”

But Paradise? Well. Let’s call it a different version of Hope. In this relentless world we can forget what good days look and feel like and we can, well, lose a bit of faith in ourselves. But faith is simple (you just have to look) and Hope is available (bits of paradise all around us).

Now. While all of it is available, it means making choices (and all that comes with choices like consequences). But in this case I am not suggesting either/or type critical thinking choices, instead I am talking about an attitudinal choice.

“I’ve just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we’ve learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn’t matter in the slightest.”

Life and choices are always all about perspective. The moment you lose perspective you have lost dimension in your life. Therefore, life becomes “flat.”

I am not suggesting always being happy or optimistic or some positivity bullshit philosophy.

I am suggesting having to try to have some fun in life and being hopeful against all odds.

I am suggesting that on a good day things are, well, good (no caveats).

I am suggesting that paradise is everywhere around you if you look for it.

You may feel hemmed in. you may feel isolated. You may feel bludgeoned by a dreary world. And, yet, you may still have a good day. Good days exist even in a dreary weary world and it, well, it feels like me on a good day. Ponder.
