#ThisGeneration uses technology too much!! what ever happened to the good old days of hieroglyphics and dying young??

Well.

If you lurk on tumblr like I do you have maybe seen the collective ‘fuck you’ this generation fuck you responseresponse from young people with regard to something called “ Honest Posters of Our Relationship with Technology” < Designer Ajit Johnson, living in England, has imagined a series of posters called “#This_Generation” – the posters show anecdotes linked to his thoughts on young people’s daily relationship with technology and social networks>.

If you haven’t seen Ajit Johnson’s poster series #This_Generation yet feel free to take a look at it now.

So.

I admit.

When I looked at this #THIS GENERATION poster series I got grumpy.

And then I thought “old man yelling at a cloud.”

this generation old man yells

I was not alone.

A young blogger, little-ranting-college-boy, generated an awesome prose response shifting the idea from “This Generation” to “Last Generation”:

===

“Can’t work a computer to its full potential or send an email, proceeds to ask someone a 1/3rd to ½ their age for help.” #LastGeneration

“Can’t accept the fact that meaningful relationships can be made online, struggles to respect and accept said relationships.” #LastGeneration

“Has drained and abused the Earth for its resources, and believes that a young person would choose internet over survival. Expects us to survive and solve the problems they have created.“ #LastGeneration

“Does not understand that phones are meant for communication, also does not understand that the average semester lasts 4 months.” #LastGeneration

“Refuses to give proper sex education, shames the younger generation for not knowing.” #Last Generation

“Does not understand how social media works and that not deleting/avoiding your recent ex online is just as bad as seeing them every day.” #LastGeneration

“Also texts and drives, pretends that they are not responsible for any accidents caused by their idiot mistakes.” #LastGeneration

“Shames teenagers for taking photos of themselves that make them feel positive about their physical image, probably can’t work the camera themselves.]” #LastGeneation

<enlightened note:

I totally agree on this … see  https://brucemctague.com/selfies-and-how-old-people-just-dont-get-it  >

“Believes that a person’s way of texting with people they are comfortable with is a sign of their intelligence level, texts just as bad, if not worse.” #LastGeneration

“Believes our generation are internet druggies, does not even acknowledge our reasons for being online, or what we do online.” #LastGeneration

“Has caused wars, economic failures, environmental disasters, perpetuated hate based on gender/race/sexuality/religion [or lack of]/and more, pretends that the younger generation is the problem.” #LastGeneration

And once the LAST GENERATION prose idea was shared online … another tumblr blogger named dadglam generated his own #LAST_GENERATION poster series.

But he did not stop there … in addition to the posters he wrote an awesome articulate post <rant> underneath his series of posters:

<note: note the brilliant call out at the bottom of every poster where each concept ‘labels’ the LAST GENERATION as ignorant, helpless, etc. … well done>

last generation 2

dadglam:

The idea for making these images in response came from both the frustration I experienced after seeing the original posters:

And then he wrote this:

There’s just so much hypocrisy coming from people who cry out about how screwed today’s generation is – in doing so, they ignore their own faults, and more than anything else, their inability to adapt. The world is changing and instead of taking the time to understand the motivations of people who use technology more, they’re just dismissed as uneducated and self-absorbed. Of course, judging a person’s worth by how educated they are is disgusting, and to say that someone is self-absorbed by constantly interacting with others is more confusing than anything else.

People seem to always forget about the “social” in “social media”. You are not screaming into a void by posting on Facebook. You are not talking to a wall by tweeting. You are putting out messages for other people, actual living humans, to read and respond to. Having a conversation on Skype isn’t exactly the same as having a face to face conversation, no, but for a lot of people, it’s all they can get.

I have friends who I’ve had for years who go to schools in different cities – but these same friends are people who I talk to incredibly often thanks to, you guessed it, social media. If it weren’t for social media, pretty much my only choice would be to let those relationships rot simply because someone I care deeply about is physically separated from me. I’m also making new friends in the city I live in, of course, but there’s no reason to have to choose between the two.

For others, social media is the only form of social interaction that works for them. Whether it is due to living conditions, mental health conditions, or anything else (and the cause is very rarely our business), some people simply find social media to be a more accessible way to converse with others.

As well as friends and family, access to the near limitless resources the internet holds can be critical to people dealing with personal health, mental health, and living situation issues. The internet has some dark points to it, yes, but it has a last generation 3wealth of knowledge that anyone can learn from.

Whether they’re learning about things that #LAST_GENERATION teachers refused to properly explain in class, such safe sex (as seen in the example above), or riots halfway around the world no one in their country would have learned about were it not for social media, the connection the internet brings us allows for so many opportunities to learn.

I love how younger people defend themselves.

I hate the word ‘millennial’ and I hate the way we generalize this generation.

I hate how the Last Generation <us older folk> ignores what This Generation <young people> perceives & believes about the Last generation <us older folk> … all because we have some out of whack perceptions of This Generation.

All I know for sure is that I am paying a shitload of attention to #THIS GENERATION and taking as many notes as I can <because they have some wonderful ideas> and trying as often, and as well as I can, to help their ideas come to Life.
