we don’t really want it for free

Hey.

Good news.

Interestingly most of us appear to understand value…and fairness.

When people are permitted to name their own price … even zero, nada, nothing … they still are willing to pay.

Yup. There is research (a university of California business school study). Go figure.

The research.

Theme park photos. Boat trip photos. Restaurant bills.

All proved people will pay – and fairly.

And … on the value side.

When people are permitted to set their own price … sales are lower than when given a fixed price.

When people are permitted to set their own price and told half will go to charity … the average price suggested soared to 5x that of non-charity price … but sales went even lower (people preferred to not buy at all rather than damage “perceived self image” by offering a too low price).

When people were permitted to choose their own price for a meal and be allowed to do so anonymously <another group was public> … the anonymous chose to pay more on average.

Ok.

Lots of numbers but suffice it to say people want to do the right thing.

Oh.

And you will gain more sales if you actually offer a fixed price that is perceived as fair (rather than have someone set their own price).

Anyway.

It’s nice to see research that suggest free isn’t always what we want.

Oh.

And suggest we have a conscience.

Wow.
