silence speak death die

“Get up, stand up, Stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up, Don’t give up the fight.”

“Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed.

If people all over the world would do this, it would change the earth.”

Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

I have always believed that music can make a statement.

That said.

Protest songs are … well … difficult to write well.

As I wrote in my Christian music post … if I have to include God in every song I 30-days-30-songs-anti-trumpever write it can constrict creativity a bit.

Protest songs have the same issue.

You choose a side to stand on <as all elections force people to do> and then you … well … take a stand. In this case … musically. It is difficult to do it well.

That is why the 30 songs dedicated to a Trump free America is turning out to be a spectacular idea.

The current songs already contributed are pretty fabulous. All seemingly radio play worthy.

So, while Trump is the common theme, the theme is articulated musically by … well … 30 different musicians & bands.

I will admit … I could argue that Trump is some fairly rich creative ground to sow … which helps.

So, first, thanks to the launch of the “30 Songs, 30 Days” project in which the author Dave Eggers has gotten medium-to-big names in rock to record songs advocating for a “Trump-free America.”

Musicians from REM to Death Cab for Cutie to Josh Ritter to Aimee Mann <so far> have contributed songs to 30 Days, 30 Songs, a project dedicated to a Trump-free America

The first song wholly initiated by the 30 Days project came from Death Cab For Cutie <Million Dollar Loan>.

Band leader Ben Gibbard seized on an anecdote from the first presidential debate in which the Donald claimed he started his business empire with a million dollar loan from his father. It’s a spoof on both privilege and elastic 30-songs-anti-trumptruth, sung with maximum sarcasm and wariness.

But my favorite <so far>?

A woman who I respect, genuinely like and will always admire … Aimee Mann … who’s contribution is actually a really nice song.

Her fabulous folk-pop song Can’t You Tell is written in her typical wry languid lyrical sense … treating his candidacy as a joke he started that got out of control.

“Isn’t anybody going to stop me?/I don’t want this job/I can’t do this job/My God/ can’t you tell?/I’m unwell.”

And, the most recent, from Franz Ferdinand called Demagogue which has incorporated … “those pussy grabbing fingers won’t let go of me now.”

What a fabulous creative project in which musicians wryly point out what most of us already know – Trump is a narcissistic spoiled asshat.
